Help please oil on carpets

Can anyone suggest an effective way to remove black oil from carpets please :eek:. It's been trodden through the house.

Will neat washing up liquid do the trick? needs to gentle enough not to discolour - one of carpets is light beige and the other darkish green.

Hi pjran my mum told me at the weekend that she used wd40 for getting black oil off beach towels she said it just disintegrated, maybe use a little of this and wash afterwards with fairy? Good luck

If you have a piece of spare carpet of the same colours, I would experiment with gunk ( used to remove heavy oil from engines...it makes oil water soluble) or swarfega ( which is used to wash oily hands). Both obtainable from Halfords or other car accessory shops or from friendly neighbour who does a lot of work on cars. Be careful as both are strong detergents and may be too powerful for a domestic carpet.
Assume you have searched goodhousekeeping etc.

I have always used brake cleaner from most motorist discount shops. but do a test somewhere unseen first.
