Hi this is my first post although I have been a lurker for some time. Not sure if this is the correct subforum to post to though.
My problem is that I subscribed online to an online service paying by direct debit on a quarterly basis, initial payment was taken promptly but a month or so before my next payment was due my subscription was stopped as I found out by trying to log into my control panel. It stated that my subscription had elapsed, I didnt intend to keep my subsription going for long after this anyhow so thought ho hum, never mind, I'll cancel my direct debit then just to make sure no future payments were taken.
A month later just after my next payment would have been duee I receive an email saying that my direct debit had been returned unpaid by my bank and could i immediately pay it together with £8 bank charges incurred by them for the returned direct debit otherwise further action would be taken through a debt recovery service.
I replied to their email stating what had happened and why I had cancelled the debit. I received no reply to this email and thought the matter dealt with.
I have today received a letter from a debt recovery service calling themselves LRC requesting a payment with further charges added to a total of £79 (the original debit amount was £40) threatening that if I didnt pay up I would be listed as defaulting and have an entry made on my credit file which would stay for 6 years! Can they do this? where do I stand legally and what can I do about it? Sorry for such a long first post, hope someone can help.
Forgot to mention that there was no fixed period or contract but it was an ongoing agreement that needed me to notify them if I wished to terminate.

What does your contract say? Was there a minimum term? did ask for x weeks cancellation period? You should have really made them aware of the mistake. What website are we referring to?0

There are very few things you can just cancel without notice.
There you go....best get that notice in right away!it was an ongoing agreement that needed me to notify them if I wished to terminate.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
