Can't decide whether to use a fireback or not

We're just in the process of installing solid fuel open fireplace and really can't decide on this question. At first we thought we'd definately use a fireback(and actually already bought milner clay one, but can return), but my main concern is it doesn't look very deep and feels like we'd lose a lot of space. So now considering lining the opening with a firebrick.
Wonder what are the pros and cons.
