How to make sure my credit card has been closed?

Due to the bad service of one of my credit card provider, I had asked them to close my credit card by talking to their customer service throught phone.
Is there any way I can make sure this card has been closed? (Master card)
Because I really can not trust this company. They can change any thing at any time by just saying " oh, it is not true. I am afraid the person (their CS reperesentative) who told you that did not know it", even that there were serveral CS representatives before had comfired the rules.
I am afraid I cancled my card throught phone may cause another problem in the future. Such as, they may say they do not allow to cancled cards through phone or didn't received my request to cancle the card, and ask me to pay for some money whoever spend in my card.
How do you guys canclled cards? If there is any way to make sure the card has been canclled? I mean some way beside this card provider.
Thanks! ??? ??? ???

You can get your credit report from experian and it should show as settled (give it a month or so to catch up). I recently got mine and found one company had not closed the account properly a few years back so my credit report was showing me as having a live credit card with 7k available which I didn't. This sort of thing could have been affecting credit decisions for the last few years for me. I think it's well worth a periodic check.0

You can also ask them to confirm in writing the closure of the account when you return the card to them.
If you get no reply write to the Chairman/ CEO of the company.0 -
To Booogle:
Thanks! Sounds like a good idea. But I think I fetched that report (is that the credit report you talking about?) once before, didn't notice there are anything about my credit card account details. Just something for my ID status changs and some credit stutus.
To ejones999:
I try to avoid to deal with them now. I can imagine how are they going to say "sorry, I have not received your letter yet. Have a nice day! Bye"
The situation now is like they wont let you get off the hook. Val

I closed my mint card just after new year. They sent me a letter and a hand written cheque for the small amount I was in credit . I'm hoping to remortgage so I'm shedding cards that are no longer 0% and I don't use. Mint are a classy credit card outfit. I'll keep their letter as proof that the account was closed.
Name the card company that is reluctant to close your account.

Cut the card up, send a letter with it.
"Further to our telephone conversation please find enclosed destroyed card. Please confirm in writing that the account has been closed"
The last company I fell out with did that. It is in theior interests as well.0 -
Oh, It is a canadian company. I lived in canada in the last two years.
They did not refuse to close my account. But, because I have not received any letter or something that can proof I had canclled that card, and I had many bad experiences with their no keeping their words. I start worry about maybe it will cause problem in the furture.
Do you think if I call Master card will comfirm the closure of the card?Val

How can your credit card company in Canada confirm that it is you and nobody else that is making these requests. Do you have secure network access to your account ?

On getting my credit report recently I found this also but am at a loss at to what card it is so have no idea who to contact to close it. I'm probabley missing something simple that will give me the information I need but I'm blowed if I can see what.0 -
Well, I signed up to the credit expert website which includes free access to your creit report. I checked the report and it clearly showed the card company name and account. I rang the card company (morgan stanley) who agreed the account was closed but didn't seem very interested so I complained via experians credit expert that the credit report was wrong and they contacted the card company and sorted the report. I then cancelled the credit expert subscription within the free period. Hope this helps..0
