They shouldn't .... the DD rules to scheme members are clear.
I'm still bemused Halifax refunded you ..... you must smile nicely! Where a DD is set up fraudulently the DD Guarantee doesn't apply ...... and the Bank should simply treat it as any other fraud case. However .... job done easiest way, so the niceties don't really matter.
No smiling nicely, just threatening to give birth on the banks floor:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

You have the advantage over me in that respect.
Not a piece of bargaining I could employ.

It is entirely possible that the OP was refunded under Fraud - when fraud takes place on accounts and it is for a small-ish amount, Halifax will refund immediately, and then investigate.0 -
There's a DD Mandate sitting on your current account (Transfers / Direct Debits etc ... left hand side) ...... cancel it. If you do that they're (Playboy) not allowed, under DD scheme rules, to set up another mandate without your permission.
Although Halifax/BOS are not very good at that. Have had a run in with them before about this and the HBOS help person was adamant that there was no way HBOS could stop anybody from reactivating a DD that I had cancelled. HBOS said the only way to stop this was for me to contact the company and get them to stop. I showed HBOS another way and closed the account.
I notice that the OP was given the same story by Halifax.
I haven't had this problem with other banks, just HBOS so the OP may want to watch their account for the playboy DD reappearing.0 -

Another way would be for HBOS to stop the naughty company from setting up any further DD's using AUDDIS. For ALL their customers. But it would appear they're unwilling to do this.
This, of course, presumes in your instance it was a Direct Debit, and not a Continuous Payment, to which Halifax's hands are indeed tied, and you do have to go the company directly.Conjugating the verb 'to be":

The Direct Debit system is managed centrally and is the same for all banks. Halifax do not have their own special system.
If a Direct Debit is cancelled, then the company is not entitled to set it back up again.
However, it does sound as though you are talking about a Continuous Payment Authority, which HBOS (like any other bank) has no authority to cancel. And if this is the case, then your "solution" of closing the account will also do nothing: if the company takes the payment again, the account will reopen and HBOS will pursue the debt with you.0 -

No it was a direct debit.
Also note that Halifax said the same to the OP about their DD.0 -
