name removal on joint bank account alliance and leicester

hi my husband and i have a joint bank account with a & l and have a £500 overdraft facility on the account
we may be about to split up, if we do can i take his name off the account if i say i am happy to be solely liable for the overdraft?
i also have a natwest acccount that is only in my name
however i don't want to have the joint account in his name too as he's bad with money and i don't feel it would be a amicable spilt
and therefore he'd be likely to mess around with the account

  • IMO open a sole account with A&l asking for the same overdraft facility.
If they agree transfer any funds and direct debits and standing orders that you want to continue paying to the new account THEN tell A&L that the joint account is now in dispute - this will mean the account being blocked (unless of course he is happy to go down to A&L with you to take his name off the account).
  • Hi, Yes you can remove a name from a joint account with Alliance & Leicester. I went into my branch with a letter signed by both parties and took in the person to be removed's debit card along with all cheque books etc. They sent us a letter to be signed by both parties removing one person and confirming that all stationary has been destroyed (the person remaining on the account can continue to use their debit card). The second name was then removed and I received a letter confirming this had been done, this letter also stated that overdrafts will remain the same as long as the amounts going into the account remain the same. I would suggest ringing them and asking them to send you the letter to remove one person from a joint account or take a signed letter etc into your branch and take it from there. it can certainly be done!!!
