Ryanair grrr

Hi there can anyone advise me of my rights? I was booked on Ryanair (i know, i know) to fly back from Lanzarote on Tuesday. Due to strong winds all flights were delayed by several hours, so we sat in the airport for hours, contintually being told that we'd be allowed to board in an hour, then another hour, etc. After about 5 hours, most airlines started flying. But Ryanair then cancelled all its flights.

In the chaos caused by zero customer service, the queue was enourmous (3 planes full), and there was no-one around to answer questions. It was clear to me that Ryanair didn't give a toss about helping us get out and we might be stuck there for days, so we booked a charter home two days later. So this cost us 90 euros plus an additional two nights accomodation and food, plus all the food in the airport etc.

Apart from the refund of a flight ticket, is there anything else we'd be entitled to? I realise Ryanair can't control the weather, but the fact that all other airlines managed to fly and they didn't, makes me think that they just didnt want to pay their staff to hang about, or something, and that this isnt really reasonable behaviour and we ought to be entitled to something?

Obviously I realise this serves me right for flying Ryanair in the first place... won't make that mistake again.

Have you bothered to call Ryanair?

What have your insurers said? I assume you did have insurance?

The biggest problem with Ryanair is passengers that don't know what they are doing. ;)
    Gone ... or have I?

Like thousands before you, you've learnt your lesson. Getting compensation from RyanAir is about as hard as getting a good, honest service from RyanAir in the first place. Very very difficult and few have managed it.

thanks pendulum. you're right of course! i've found the terms and conditions, i'll give it a go as i havent got anything to lose!

dmg24 - added to my ignore list as i've noticed that your many posts seem often to take the side of the corporation over the consumer, which is not what i think this site is about.

OP if you take this up and win you will have found a new lucrative career. You are going to have to do a lot of reading and analysing airline rules and regulations.

    Good luck.

Ever thought that perhaps the reason the flights were cancelled is because the ryanair crew had run out of flying time? if they had been flying since 6am that morning would you really want them to fly you back despite having been up for maybe 18 hours?

its not as if they can pop into the motorway services to stretch their legs and grab a can of redbull!

Why? That may have been the reason.

Although I imagine they didn't go as they have mainly small planes that it may have still been too windy for.

The following letter was sent to Ryane Air by recorded delivery (obviously thier fax was not working) and they claim that they have not received it and will not add the letters missing in his name unless the full price is paid
(Spoken to Ryane air trying to convince them to do something decent for once but falling on deaf airs and i am just Letting my air out on this forum. any comments welcome)

    By Recorded Delivery

    To whom it may concern

On the 29th Sep I booked a flight going from London Stansted (STN) to Katowice (KTW) reservation number ….. for Mr. S. F….. When he turned up on the 2nd Jan 10 to the check in desk at Stansted Airport he was told to go to the ticket desk because the letters DON from his first name were missing, being that there was no actual change in his name he so thought that it will be an easy task to add on these letters but to his shock the person sitting behind the desk named Serkan Sezek was asking the high price of £280 which he was not able to pay. Being that this is not the first time that we are using the good services of Ryaneair and have previously flown many times over with only the initials mentioned on the boarding pass Mr. F…… went to another check in desk which of course did not do any trouble and he checked his luggage in but to his dismay Mr. Sezek suddenly noticed that everyone was very happy and overjoyed (there was a group of ten people and Mr. F….. was the group leader) and was determined not to allow Mr. F….. on the plane, he than called through to the gate that when the group arrives they should check whose boarding pass has only got the initials on it. When Mr. F…… and his group arrived to the gate whilst standing in the long line the group were singled out one by one from the line to have their boarding passes double checked and of course Mr. F…… was than singled out and was told that he will not be allowed on the plane even he will now be ready to pay what ever price, all the begging and all the explanations that Mr. F…… is the group leader was to no avail, they even said we don’t mind if the whole group has to stay behind Mr. F….. the group leader will not be able to board the plane, Mr. F….. than asked the lady for her name but she refused to give her name claiming that she has no obligation to give her name.
Mr. F……. had to stay behind and had to go through the big hassle of getting out from the gate and picking up his luggage which was specially removed from the plane and all this took him at least an hour.

Mr. F…. than booked flight …….. from Stansted to Krakow and had to pay a further fee of £100

Being a good customer for a long time and booking loads of tickets and have myself flown many times with boarding passes that only had the initials i.e. few examples enclosed
Furthermore Mr. F…… himself flew back from Katowice a few days later with his boarding pass having no trouble what so ever, I feel that Mr. F……. was completely mistreated and would at least ask for the £100 back (although it costed him much more because he had to get his own taxi from Krakow which he paid $200)
I would also request that the following bookings should be amended to his full name SDON F.......
    booking enclosed
