Problem with BT and direct debit

Hi, wonder if anyone else has had this problem.
I pay my broadband and line rental to BT by direct debit and have done so without difficulty since becoming a customer last year.
I received a letter from BT claiming that the direct debit payment was refused by my bank (Alliance and Leicester) on 2 occasions in January and I will be charged £10 for it. I had more that sufficient funds in my account to cover the bill. When I checked my bank account no payment had been made. I contacted Alliance and Leicester who have e-mailed me confirming that Bt did not attempt to collect the payment.
I contacted BT by phone and offered to forward a copy of the e-mail from the bank. They weren't interested and said the charge stood and blamed the bank. I appear to be in stalement with neither company taking responsibility or offering to cancel/reimburse me for the charge. I am also concerned about this happening again.
Other posters mention a "whole bill direct debit payment", what is that? How do I set it up? Would I still be able to get the DD discount?
I would love to change phone/internet suppliers when my contract is up but I live in rural Scotland and very few suppliers offer competive offers here. Thanks for reading. Best wishes

Whole bill DD is exactly that, it pays off your whole bill for that month rather than a fixed pre-determined amount, so you are never in debt or credit.
If you are on a non-LLU exchange you still have the same range of bb/phone suppliers as anyone else, but you won't get the cheaper offers which are mainly LLU.No free lunch, and no free laptop
