Fitness First advice needed please

Middle Feb 2009 I joined Fitness First Gym, paying my first month fees by debit card on the day I joined, then monthly direct debit payments started on 1st March. Therefore, my membership should expire on 31st Jan 2010. I decided I didnt want to renew, so sent a letter to cancel membership and also cancelled direct debit with bank. I checked my bank online today and found that Fitness First have taken another payment from my account, using the debit card details from last year when I joined. This is not authorised by me, is it legal to just take another payment without telling me?

What did your contract say about cancellation? They may say you have to give a certain period of notice. If you have complied with all contractual requirements then tell your bank it is an unauthorised transaction.0
