If it's just from burning untreated wood then it's fine to use in your garden. The main nutrient in it is very water soluble though. You can put it in your compost heap or sprinkle it aroung your plants. It's good for fruit trees, gooseberries and onions I've heard. I always put some around my fruits trees beneath the layer of compost they get every spring.

I also use it as an effective slug deterrent. Slugs can't cross a dry layer of the stuff as it dries up their slime. Ants can't cross it either. If you have aphids on your greenhouse plants it's worth trying a layer of woodash around them as this problem is often caused by ants farming the aphids for their honeydew.

Ash from hardwoods is okay but I'd be tempted to dump ash from burning conifers.

Wood ash is also good for keeping down the smell in poultry houses.

I just add mine to the compost heap, as long as it's just wood and paper and no coal which contains toxins
