PC dvd/cd drive sulking

Hello all. I am having problems with the dvd/cd drive on my 3 year old compaq presario ( running vista). It does nothing when you insert a disc. I have tried to re-install the driver, with no luck . when you open device manager and click on the driver it comes up with error code 19. I have tried to install a friends external drive - with the same result. micrsoft fix it solutions website does not resolve the problem. As a last resort i tried system restore but this also failed (system restore failed to work). I am more adept with a spanner than a mouse so find it very frustrating. If my patience finally runs out and i have to take it to be repaired are there any safeguards i should take i.e. removing passwords etc (and if so how is this done).

Does this help at all, or is it the one you tried already? Otherwise an over-the-top reinstall of the OS might help.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0
