What is it?
You get £10 worth of Wi-fi use at 6,000 hotspots around the country. The wi-fi use is charged at 10p/min so this should give you 1 hour 40 minutes worth.
Its called the credEcard, but don't worry about the name or the fact it's a card, really it's just a piece of card with instructions on to give you a code, there's no actual technology with it.
How to get it?
It comes free with a number of computer magazines. These are usually priced around £4, but Mobile Computer costs only £1.90 (so it could be argued, they're not free, but you get the point!). They are the following:
What you do with it?
If you have wi-fi on your laptop, as most modern laptops do you can use it at 6,000 locations around the UK. Once your laptop "finds the network" you connect through and enter your specific code and you're connected up.
Why's it doing this?
Well freebies are common with Computer magazines anyway, just try to find one that doesn't come with a 'free DVD'! Yet credEcards aim is simple, they want you to try the product, find it really useful then subscribe to buy more minutes.
Luckily once you run out of minutes there's no auto-subscribe, so if you choose to, you can simply use the minutes then forget it.

didnt expect there to be any hot spots in my town.....how surprised i was to find even the scummiest bars have apparently got it!!

I think credEcard isn't bad if you want to use wifi briefly spread over a long time - I didn't read the T&Cs - does your credit expire?
Another alternative is getting vouchers for 30 days BT Openzone for £2 on Ebay.
There must be a regular supply of these, since there's a number of sellers offering them and the ones I looked at had good feedback.
As with all things from BT there is bound to be plenty of small-print, it's bound to have a data amount limit as well as the 30 days.
I think they have a roaming agreement with "the cloud" so there's lots of hotspots to use.

No coverage is showing in Northern Ireland. Unless anyone has one of these cars and can confirm otherwise?0
-
Hi - the hotspots look like they are operated by The Cloud. There do not appear to be any BT Openzone or T-Mobile hotspots listed. This would explain why there are no hotspots in Northern Ireland (The Cloud don't have any in NI)
For a full list, see http://wifi.credecard.com/docs/credEcard_hotspot_list.pdf
It's worth comparing the costs against openzone vouchers listed on eBay0 -
Don't forget some places offer free wireless internet anyway - eg in Edinburgh: Jolly Judge [Royal Mile]; Baroque Bar [Broughton Street]; JuiceMonkeys [near Edinburgh University] - as long as you have a laptop with a wireless card you can use the internet for free (although they probably expect you to buy a beer/juice/coffee!)"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."
