party for 80th but only small family. Ideas please?

My dad will be 80 this coming May - first person to ever make it that far in the family :)

I want to do something special but we do not have a large circle of friends and only about 10-15 family members.

I did consider all going for a meal somewhere but I would like to do something a little more inspiring if possible and would welcome any ideas from people please.

He won't travel far so a trip away is out of the question but he does love attention so I know he would like a get together of some sort..

Does he have any interests you could take advantage of? Like if he's into watching motor racing maybe a day for all at a reasonably nearby track? Or if he likes the horses then a day at the races?
Or what about arranging a photographer to come along and do a family portrait of everyone with your dad in the middle of the picture :) You could even have a few that were more informal if you wanted :)

  • we were are a "night at the races party" not so long ago
you get an interactive dvd game, called Day at the races (they are £5 on ebay i just looked, dont know if cheaper anywhere else)
it was really good fun, and you can make it as big or small an event as you want to

if you are doing a hamper, what about a digital photo frame and you can take lots of pictures on his day and he can sit and reflect on the good times
  • How about a party at home with a 'This is your life' section. Will obviously need some prep before hand but you could do him a big red book full of his life. Someone could be the host and invite guests to tell anecdotes etc. He could have a big special chair and perhaps you could video it for him so that he can keep it forever. I'm sure he'd feel really special.
