Which laptop for a friend - which processor?

Of these two I would suggest the L500 (the Intel one) its got 1 eSATA/USB2 port and 2 USB's and WIN 7/64 The AMD has Win 7 Professional (does not state 32/64) and the Intel has a free memory slot too.

The Intel one also has a larger hard drive - potentially useful if you build up a large music/photo collection over a few years and install a range of programs.

You can get a better specification at a cheaper price with other makes, but then Toshiba does have a good name for reliability.

I only just noticed the question about being quiet. The Intel CPUs generally use less power than AMD CPUs, so the Athlon could be slightly noisier than the others (but there is no way to tell for sure without seeing the computer in person or reading a review, as fan designs differ so much).

As for the Celeron, indeed it is only single core. Sorry...I hadn't noticed that before! I know that Intel have been phasing out single core Celerons in favour of the newer dual core versions, but I hadn't realised that there still of single core versions in production.

Yeah she probably could get a cheaper one but she wants a Toshiba one. Ah so the Intel ones might be abit quieter, good to know :-)

what some fo you have missed is

Thanks for that - does this mean its a faster processor than the Core 2 Duo?

Yes, the Core i3 is a faster and newer CPU - it is one of the replacements for the Core 2 Duo. The Core i3 computer has more hard drive space too.
