Cheaper than homemade?

Comments

  • i think you can buy most things cheaper than homemade but the taste and quality will be nowhere near as good in most cases..

    id say :
tinned tomatoes - much cheaper than buying and skinning fresh ones
custard- fresh custard with egg yolks is way more expensive than ready made stuff
    ice-cream- ditto
tea bags- all that sewing!! :D;)

Not mine! Mine is gorgeous, but canned rice pudding does have its place. It's not worth putting the oven on for a couple of hours just for a rice pud!

My DH loves rice pudding, but sadly it's one of the things I'm absolutely rubbish at - he has to make do with tins :D. The only thing is that it doesn't come with a skin on, which for some very strange reason he likes to eat (yuck!). He and my DD1 like custard skin too (double yuck!)
  • Milk... as much as i would LOVE to have my own herd of cows i do believe its cheaper to buy by the 6 pint ;-) x

it seems to be in some tescos and not others, they were £1.29 in one of the stores I use on Friday so I left it and bought another brand at 39p for 150g
I've just had a look online and it is coming up at £1.29!

What a massive price hike and how on earth can they charge that for value shortbread, it's cheaper to buy branded?

Planning on starting the GC again soon :p
  • I find that if things are cheaper to buy than make then the quality usually suffers. I was short on time and money so bought some value fairy cakes, at 24p for 12 they are cheaper to buy than make - but they tasted of nothing.

Tesco shortbread fingers at 9p is an exception! But this is obviously a marketing ploy as they are indeed £1.29 now!

I buy very little ready made food, but I think custard powder is cheaper than ready made.

I buy most ready make items to save time rather than money, puff pastry (as someone has already pointed out) is one, as is hummus, pasta sauce (usually pesto), and pataks curry paste.

Just looked through my list of meals and most are made from basic ingredients and our weekly shop for 2 usually comes in at abour £25 (except when OH comes along, last week it was £40 ).
