Question about building an extension

We are thinking of building a double storey extension on to the side of our house. Does anyone know if there are any rules and regulations about how close you can build to either your property boundary or to your neighbours house?

Tgere are, but you will need to get chapter and verse from your local Planning Department.

Local council planning policies differ.

Some will require at least 1m space from the boundary, others may let one neighbour build up to the boundary, but then the other neighbour can not do anything closer than 2m

Some apply this at first storey level only, others apply it to both storeys

The idea is to avoid what is called a "terracing effect", so if there is lots of space then any rule may be relaxed.

Planners also love to impose a setback from the front of the propery, so you can't build flush with the front wall. This really messess up the front bedroom
