Our phone has started ringing differently

Hi,
I wonder if anybody can shed some light on this. Sometimes our telephone rings normally (ring, ring) but it has just started ringing differently - it give a couple of rings like normal but then changes to more of an american ring with a long ring then a break and then a long ring again. We have two phones attached and both do this so it is nothing to do with the ringtone that is set on the phones - it seems to be coming from the telephone exchange. Our service is standard service from BT with caller display and nothing else.
Thanking you for any advice

Well, the only time this happened to us (and we found out later people had also been hearing a ring tone but it wasnt coming through our end) it was traced to water in the underground cables by BT? Ring them and report a fault.0

Thanks for the info - I think the line is ok as people get through fine and the line is very clear - just the incoming ringing that is funny0

It is probably a setting on the phone itself, have a look in the manual.0
