Speed Dating - What to expect?

I agreed to go with a friend to a Speed Dating event that she wanted to go to, and I'm dreading it to be honest!
I've no idea what to expect, how to act etc. Has anyone been on an event like this?
Thanks!

At the start of the night you get given a name badge, a pen and a card on which to make notes (you don't make notes in front of people, you wait till they have moved on to the next person!). Then you get 3-5 minutes (the organisers ring a bell to let you know when time's up) to talk to each person of the opposite sex, which is nowhere near long enough if you actually like the person, and far, far, far too long if you don't click at all! One man sat down opposite me, wrote my name on his notepad and put a big 'X' beside it! The next three minutes were the longest – and quietest – three minutes of my life!
Most people asked fairly standard questions, e.g., "What do you do?", Where do you live?", "How old are you?", etc. After you've heard these ten/fifteen times, they get quite boring so I'd recommend having some more interesting questions at hand.
At the end of night you get a chance to have a drink and mingle with everyone. However as there were 30 women and 27 men (each time the bell rang, three women ended up with no partner!), by the time every woman had spoken to every man, it was midnight so my friends and I just went home.
It was a reasonably fun night but I wouldn't go there with any great expectations.
BrionaIf I don't respond to your posts, it's probably because you're on my 'Ignore' list.0 -
Yep - I echo Briona... fun night but don't honestly go expecting the love of your life.Man plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.0

Aw Briona that sounds awful! In saying that, it will probably be me putting big crosses then trying to look interested for 3 minutes! haha..
I'm not going to find anyone really, my friend has been really keen on going for a while so I've been roped in as moral support!
Will keep you updated!
