Repairing internet explorer, help

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to repair internet explorer, ive got windows vista. when i open I.E, it just says not responding, i have got google chrome on aswell but its been on ages so i cant see that being the problem, but that also as a little problem and when i try and open a link from a page it sometimes says cannot be displayed i try 3 or 4 times sometimes it works sometimes i give in. i have tried installing internet explorer 8 again and it just says it cant because i have a newer version. please help

You can disable plugins that might be causing a problem - go to control panel, internet options. Now go to the programs tab, then click manage add-ons. Disable everything and see if it helps.

You can reset IE to factory default. Tools/Internet Options/Advanced Tab - RESET.

Thank you to u both, followed post 2 first because couldnt even open the page to get tools and that worked but followed post 3 also to make sure things were ok, so works well now thanks to u both x
