Decide how you are going to use it, how many partitions - if any, where you are going to keep what files, if your are going to share it with others, decide where they are going to keep their files.
I find with a new computer that loading the particular software that I need takes a couple of days.
It's a good Idea to work out what software you are going to need and collect up any registration codes that you may already have on software you already own.
If it doesnt come with a proper operating system disc then a recovery disc would be a good idea. (I like this article http://askbobrankin.com/recovery_disc_for_windows_vista_or_windows_7.html?awt_l=8_R_N&awt_m=1c2Km_ULSuP6SL )
That should keep you going for a while.I'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!

This sounds like something for more "advanced" users. Editing partitions can go very wrong unless you know exactly what you are doing.0 -

I agree with Marty, plug in peripherals, boot it up and start using it. I just install any programs I need as I go along. I suppos the only thing I do before using it much is set up individual user accoutns for the family. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends

If it's a Mac, then I admire the packaging. Sad I know...No free lunch, and no free laptop
