Cheapest way to get from Glasgow to Sheffield?

Hi, just asking if anyone has any bright ideas about a cheap way to get between Glasgow and Sheffield as I'm trying to get down there in the middle of March for my friend's birthday and so far it is going to cost me £50 on the train, which frankly, being a poor student, I don't have!
I've looked at buses etc but it takes SEVEN HOURS _pale_ and I think I'd be certifiable after 7 hours on a bus to be honest. If it comes to it I'll use the bus but trying to think of any way possible so I can get the train!
Been looking at splitting fairs, but where's the best, and cheapest place to do this?

Thanks for any help!

    Dates? Times?

    Arbitrarily picking 16 &18 March.
Advance Singles are available on those days for £16 out and £13.80 back.

Info from East Coast Trains website.
  • Is there any dates in March that your looking at?
either way try splitting at Manchester Pic and for the Glasgow to Manchester Pic leg travel by Transpennie Express.
Best way to find this is via East Coast Website, click 'show slower route' and tick 'transpennie express trains only' and update. For a randum date in the middle of March.

Glasgow to Manchester Pic Advance single £12
Manchester Pic to Sheffield Advance single £5

Total £17 one way (£34 Return) Just make sure that you make your connections at Manchester Pic there and back around 30-45 mins will do it.

Edit: Late again, but info might help

    Ahh...

Weekend train travel is not as cheap as midweek.
You will struggle to get under the £50 that you have already found.

However, look closely at the advice in Livingthedream's post and you might be able to find a combination of tickets totalling £48.
  • As KeithP states weekend travel can be expensive, however, if you don't mind travelling exceptionally early and coming back late then, don't do the 'slower route thing' just do a normal search and;
05:40 Glasgow Central to Manchester Pic £14 Advance single
Plenty of £5 Advance singles from Manchester to Sheffield
Plenty of £5 Advance singles from Sheffield to Manchester
19:46 Manchester Pic to Glasgow Central £14 Advance single
