Non existant customer receives huge gas bill!

Options
Hi, Can anyone help with my problem? I moved house 3 years ago and the company I was told by the previous owner was the gas supplier told me that they weren't when i rang to transfer the account to my name. I rang transco, the independent meter suppliers and the national grid to find out who my supplier was, they couldn't tell me. I even rang other gas companies to see if they were my supplier. Today I received a bill for £2000 from the company who had told me that I wasn't their customer! They apparently had been sending bills to the wrong address. My meter number and the one on the bill dont match and I have no idea if its accurate or not or if it really relates to my house. I'm really ticked off especially as I remained an electricity customer of this company! Apart from telling me that I wasnt their customer this company have never contacted me until today. Any ideas?

How to identify your gas supplier

Who did you think would be paying for the gas you have been using for the last 3 years?

Unless you can prove you contacted the supplier and asked them to bill you, you'll have to pay for what you consumed.

Hopefully you were putting money away as you went, for the day the bill eventually arrived.

If you really can't afford the bill in one go, call the supplier now and see if you can negotiate some type of repayment plan with them.

    Welcome to the forum.

I assume the 'any ideas' you are seeking are ways to avoid paying for the gas you have consumed?

Had you written a recorded delivery letter to the company, that the previous owner told you was the supplier(why would he lie?), you would have a good case to only pay back for the last 12 months gas.

As it is you have had an interest free loan and will doubtless get a further interest free loan.
