EMPLOYERS are refusing to hire Generation Y workers because they lack a work ethic and spend too much time talking to friends in work hours.

"Employees come to us about Gen Y, saying they're looking for a staff member but they don't want anyone in that 20s age bracket because they find they don't understand common courtesy in the workplace," Kristy-Lee Johnston, director of Footprint Recruitment told The Courier-Mail.

And the complaints don't only come from managers and bosses.
Social researcher Mark McCrindle said: "They also come from other people in the team who are of another generation."

Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland policy general manager Nick Behrens said the global financial crisis should act as a wake-up call.
"The chamber is hoping Gen Y will learn from this, that they can no longer take for granted the good times and will no longer get away with the luxuries they have been given."

Article from Aus, but I know many employers here feel the same way.

The comment section is quite revealing as to the different perspectives through the generations as well.

Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

It's not all their fault - they have partly been created this way. This is the first generation with easier uninspired education and dumbed down exams, giving them a false sense of their own success and achievement. Grown up in a world where you see people continuously getting rewarded for failure and penilised for their efforts. These kids learn by example.

We find similar here. Whenever we interview, the youngsters always seem to give us the impression we are honoured by their presense (if they bother to turn up). This is going to be a real problem as you could have a generation of people who could potentially be unemployable. We have had several exceptions, so it's not all bad though....

I should think for a lot of the younger 20's, this is the first time the workplace has had to experience the "I know my rights and have my expectations" culture.

Graham_Devon - Exactly! And MSE isn't going to help!

I'm in my 20s and am a manager in a small business, so can sympathise with both sides of this!

Attitudes (consumer rights, more than laziness) do change, as do companies.
Companies unable to adapt, fail. Always the case, and good riddance to them!

    Hmmm.... I don't know

I'm ruder to (bad) customers than anyone else. I swear (not to customers- mostly to myself!). I cut corners where it is effective to the purposes of the business to do so. I am upfront and open with issues at first but if I'm met with a brick wall I silently take revenge on others to sort it. I work extra hours.

The oldies? They dont like change, they prefer the old, slow ways of doing things. They won't do anything beyond their contracted work (even if the place is falling down around them). They b!tch about eachother but don't ever try to address the problems.

I'd rather work with them though then have them all replaced with clones of me :o

But I hate the flashy types most- all talk no experience/ common sense/ action types. They're the worst of the lot. Usually about 40 IME

I can safely say I own none of the above.
