I am having trouble with an avi I am trying to convert to an mpg. I am using tmgenc to do the encoding but the resulting mpg file only has audio and not any video. I can successfully convert other avis using the same set up but this one particular file does not work.
The avi itself plays fine in media player and when I use avicodec to check up on it, the video comes up as '885 Mb, 762 Kbps, 29.970 fps, res. 640*352 (16:9), xvid = XVID Mpeg-4, Supported'
I suspect that media player can use the required codec but tmpgenc can't. Is this likely and how can I fix the problem? Installing the latest xvid codec had no effect.

Yes you are probably missing a codec. Its been a while since I was doing these conversions a lot but I think that Media Player etc. uses something called Direct Show codecs, whereas TMPGenc needs a suitable Video For Windows codec to be installed.
I used to use the K-lite codec pack (full version) which comes with pretty much any codec you'd ever need for converting video. You can get it here http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm
This program is good for analysing video files and determining how they are encoded - http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ (note this is bundled with the K-lite pack anyway)0 -
you want to either download the mega pack or 64bit version dependant on machine http://www.codecguide.com/download_mega.htm this will give choice of all versions
i use tmpgenc express 4 and dont have these issues but another good bit of software out there for avis (freeware)is http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.php?b2=10
