Under 18 students

Options
Is there any bank that gives a card to students under 18 that an adult can add money to ? My dependent is going away to study and I want to make sure they can get hold of some cash if they need it. Everything seems to be geared to over 18's.

Get a standard current account instead?

Being under 18 means he just won't be allowed a credit card or overdraft.

All my dependents and no longer dependents have a bank account at the same bank that I bank with. I am able to instantly transfer monies to them.

Any normal under 18 current account is BACS compatible and gives the account holder a debit card.

Why a card? Why not just do a bank transfer?

I think the OP means a card for the account holder so they can get the money out of a cash machine rather than having to go into a branch.
A lot of banks do accounts with Visa Debit cards and as Space Rider said, if your dependent gets an account with the same banking group as you, the bank transfers will be instantaneous

I read it as the student will have a card that the parent can 'load' with money. I'm probably wrong though.

A bank account with a debit card is a far better option than a prepaid credit card imo. At that age, everyone should really have a bank account.
  • I had some problems getting a student account and the associated benefits when I went to uni as I was 17 when the term started. Banks were offering incentives like cash or railcards and I didn't want to miss out. I went to several banks and most were not interested in finding a solution.

However Lloyds TSB agreed to set up a current account which would automatically switch to a student account on my 18th birthday, at which point I received the cash incentive and a credit card. I realise this doesn't help your immediate situation, but could be useful for your forward planning.
