Personally, I spend more at Cristmas because my children ane 6 and 3 and are still 'believers'. I love the magical side of it all.... them going to bed next to an empty stocking and waking up to it being full and being amazed that they didn't hear santa or the reindeer in their bedrooms :rotfl: and them coming down in the morning and finding the presents when there was no sign of them anywhere before! I make it as special as I can while they are young.
I would like to spend more on their own birthdays because that is what is more important to me, but I will not do so until they are both non believers in santa - as that is what they see as being more magical. We don't get the same reaction on their own birthdays - they know presents from us and yes they are grateful for what they get but we're no santa claus and we just don't have the same effect!!!
Once they are older and 'know' then Christmas will not be as special and that is when we will change it to being all about their birthdays, as that is how I think it should be.
I don't get the whole santa thing. Why lie to your kids?I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair0 -
Well if its not that Mrcow why do you feel the need to moan about the amount of money that is spent on other peoples children?0

Because I can't imagine not growing up with the memories I have about Christmases before I knew the truth and because the look of amazement on their faces is soooooo worth it
. Do you have children? 0 -

No, but I still remember the utter disappointment at discovering that my parents had lied to me for 9 years, and that I was then forced to be part of the lie for another 3 years just so that my little brother would still believe.I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

I don't remember the disappointment when I found out, I'm sure there must have been some I don't remember I just remember the good bits. I'm happy that my parents made all those years so special for me and my sister - who incidently had just as much enjoyment helping to fool me for another few years after she found out until I found out. I only have fond memories of christmas and don't think I am doing anything wrong by making special memories for my children. I don't know when/how they will find out the truth, but whenever it is I will make sure they know it was done with the best intentions and I'm sure they won't be damaged by the 'lies' too much!!0 -

I don't "feel the need to moan"! It's called a discussion - do you not get that? It's why it's been posted on a discussion forum - for people to offer differing opinons and their thoughts on the subject.
So I turn around for example and say that I think having 3 games consoles in one house is a waste - and your response is that it's probably because I'm jealous because I couldn't afford to buy them myself. Priceless.
I'm hoping that your user name isn't an indication of your age. I would hope that someone of an age of 25 would perhaps generally have better deductive skills than that."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
I dont see what the problem or how it is a waste if there is 3 game consoles in the one house. Growing up we had 3 or more at my parents. In our house (myself and my h2b) have a ps3, wii and 2 ds lites. Also we both have laptops, a pc and an ipod each. So i take it must be wasting money then?0

We didn't have any consoles when I was growing up....but then that is because I am 39 years and 10 months and they hadn't really been invented/affordable to the normal people.:rotfl:
We do have consoles now....eldest saved his pocket money and birthday money and got himself an Xbox 360 elite, middle son saved his pocket money, birthday money and Christmas money and got himself a Wii...I refuse to pay out for expensive items like that, they want it, they blooming well save for it and buy it themselves! All 3 also have DS's, middle son got his passed onto him from his dad and me (ex had got bored of it and because it was as we were going through the divorce with joint monies frozen, money was a little tight), eldest got his for his birthday from Ex and I got youngest sons one for half price due to a damaged box (ok, I had a little help from my parents with this one).We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
We don't always spend a lot on DD, normally under £50.
At Christmas she got an i-pod which is a very big pressie for her.
She rarely has big birthday parties, we found it nicer to have a few close friends come for tea and a cinema visit than her getting a huge pile of presents from everyone in the class with a runaround in a sports hall somewhere, we think the parents who go down the whole class route must either have masses of storage space or throw out perfectly good toys that have hardly been played with to make room for the next birthday pile.:p
That's not how we're bringing our DD up.:D She's still delightful, I'm glad to say, unlike some of the other 10yo in her class who are on their third mobile phone and it's not good enough because they are demanding an i-phone like the other kids in the class!!:eek:Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
