I have tried to erase disks that I did not write protect but am unable to do so as message tells me that they are write protected. I have tried to reformat but can't do this either. When I check properties even erased disks show a high proportion as being used.
How can I clear my disks for re-use.

Have you tried using different DVD burning software? Erasing the disk should normally do it, so this sounds like either bad disks or a problem with the drive. Are the DVDs from a major brand? A lot of cheap disks often have compatibility problems with some drives.0

I don't use cheap disks but have been having trouble doing a back up. I use the control panel to back up and have used these disks before. Other than following on screen instructions I don't know how to erase the disks and this command is not coming up on the menu. Can you help anymore, please?0

Can you not just record something else onto the disc, or will it not let you?

Do you only have the basic Windows DVD software or do you have some additional software installed? If you do not have any additional software, try to free Ashampoo Burning Studio 2010 from:
http://www.v3.co.uk/vnunet/downloads/2235230/ashampoo-burning-studio-2009
You may need to click on a link to get a serial number when you install it, but that is free.
This software might be able to erase your disks. If it can't, then must likely you have either used the disks too many times already or else there is a compatibility problem between this brand of DVDs and your drive. A less likely possibility is that there is a fault with the drive.
What is the make and model number of your DVD drive? It is possible that there is a software update for it (called a firmware update) to improve compatibility with disks.0 -
Try using LSoft DVD Eraser. They make some really good software, and if DVD Eraser is anything like ISO Burner / ISO Maker it will be simplistic but does the jobOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them
