new sofa & DFS

Hi,

Having brought my first house about a year ago it's time I chucked out the 2nd hand sofa's we currently have & brought my first new sofa (after a long string fo 2nd hand sofa's in various rented flats).

After being a little shocked at the price  I started to look for credit options & the main place that seems to do 0% finance is DFS as I've never looked into this before can anyone tell me if it's because the prices are higher there to compensate or are the sofa's not very good there?

My other plan is to save a regular amount each month until we have enough to buy one straight out but that could take a while as I already have a 0% credit card balance transfer going on that I am paying off so I don't want to add to that, I'm trying to pay it off before they stop doing them all together.

Cheers,
worto.

They're prices certainly aren't higher than equivalent places - you may get sofas cheaper, but I think DFS stuff is well made. I recently bought my second sofa from DFS - (first set are still going strong in my MIL's house, but we just decided on a change). The first two I bought were cream leather, and they're now over 9 years old and still look really good. I personally would go for a leather or part-leather suite, as they're a lot easier to keep clean. Having said that, the second set I bought are leather base with fabric upholstery, now over a year old and still looking really good. I know several people who've bought there, and they're all happy with their sofas.

You can get some particularly good bargains at some of their bigger shops on end-of-line or unusually coloured stuff. Word of warning though - they will try the hard sell on the extended warranty. Resist! Best deal we've had are the pay nothing for 1 year and then pay at 0% over 3 years, which is a lot better than a CC. Finance company they were using when I bought was Hitachi Insurance.

I bought one from DFS a couple of years ago, I'm very happy with it, I think leather is best as well but that might just be my personal taste, I would wait until they had a sale on though to get it a bit cheaper, The one we wanted never went into the sale but lots of others did and there was a good saving on them. We took the pay nothing for a year then 0% over three years as well, I was happy.

We bought on ebay just before Xmas.
Two brand new leather sofas, direct from a company who advertise on ebay.

Much to our delight we got the two sofas for approx the same price as a single one from a shop just down the road.
We also got them delivered within 10 days, unlike the local shop which said 10weeks.
Would definately do the same thing again

    :j
We all evolve - get on with it

Thanks for the answers, I wasn't going to go for leather as I have 2 cats and I am too worried about them scratching it.

I'm not keen on ebay as I want to go and bounce around on it (if they'll let me) before I buy it!

I didn't even know you could get warranties on sofa's! they'll try anything to squeze extra money out of people won't they!

my local DFS is doing late night on Thursday so I'll go and have a look. As for the sale, aren't shops like this always doing a sale or is there a certain time of year I should be looking out for to get the actual sale. On thier website it's advertising discount & double discounts!?! I assumed this was just a % off an inflated price to make it look good.

Maybe I'm just being a bit too cynical :D

    Cheers,
    Steve.

They don't always have a sale on as far as I know, if they have double discount on now, i'd go for it, but remember, as with anything else only pay what you feel it's worth, don't spend 500 just because it says it used to be 1250

I always wait for the double discount sale - it is genuine, at least insofar as they have to sell the stuff at a higher price in at least one of the shops for 28 days.

Don't think you should have a problem with cats and leather. You can buy sort of sticky-back plastic protector thingies to stick on the edges if they do start misbehaving, but cats generally don't seem to be that keen on leather - maybe it's the feel of it, or the smell? The leather on sofas is pretty tough - I've had little girls with those fancy buckled shoes climbing on mine and it didn't seem to bother it. DFS can usually recommend someone (I remember there was a guy in Somerset, I think) who can repair sofas (quite cheaply) if you were ever to end up with a tear.

    Oh yea double discount
    genuine.
A sofa slashed from £1200 to £600 plus another 20% off
    get real.
Reminds me of the time my neighbour got replacement windows and doors but insisted that she only paid for the front ones and got the back FREE.
Like when you see 20% off, don`t you know they`ve put 30% on it in the first place.
