i have a new sky remote control, its a whiteish grey one rather then the whole black unit.
it works fine however the volume adust does not function. is there a way to set it up to work as the other one did on my tv?

Yes it needs programming to control your make and model of TV.
All the relevant codes are in the support section on the Sky Interactive menu.
