Thanks to choc for asking the question I was afraid to ask, and to Soolin for the answer!

There are only a couple reasons given when retracting a bid so they might have just picked one.

If that is the case they're still not following the rules and should be reported. If they needed their bid cancelling they need only contact the seller who can put ANY reason for that cancellation rather than them lying.

But as a buyer you do not have to contact the seller to cancel bids. Why would anyone bother to contact the seller when they can do it themselves (even if the drop down menu doesn't have your reason) and how can you prove they are lying? Reporting them unless they make a habit of it is a bit pointless as nothing will happen. I would rather someone cancel there bids on my auction than win it and decide they dont want it.

If they say they were unable to contact you and you know they didn't, they're lying. If they say they bid the wrong amount, but they haven't re-bid, they're lying. Easy peasy.

I would rather a buyer DIDN'T put a false, publicly viewable comment on my inadequacies as a seller on my auction, such as: 'description changed' (when it didn't) or 'couldn't contact seller'

Good point I never thought of that. I have never used those reasons as the mistake was mine not the seller. If one of the options was 'I didn't read auction properly' I think the bid retractions would be a lot more honest.
  • Well one same bidder withdrew bids 3 times on my auction! luckily he didn't win it but im still fuming where can i report him too?
