I was also going to mention Dundonald Castle. I was at a wedding last August, it was a lovely day, it is partially ruined but great for photos and really romantic. We all went on to the Marine Hotel in Troon which is also beautiful.

hey! Yeah its lovely isn't it.. I have been to wedding reception there once and I remember it being absolutely fab... this was when I was a teenager and so the fact it stands out is quite something - you know what teenagers are like! But that was like 97 when you could have the full thing there.. ceremony sit down reception and evening reception.... not sure if thats the case now.
  • Have you thought about Bothwell Castle. Think they do weddings.
  • Chatelherault in Hamilton, you can have reception and everything there. I think Bothwell Castle's really only for photo opps. Is the one in Gretna Comlongon Castle? I think it was quite reasonable, went to a wedding there fairly recently.

Comlongon castle is about 10 miles from gretna, i have been and looked at it, its lovely on the outside but i got freaked out knowing that we would be getting married only meters away from the old torture chamber, the staff were lovely but it was stupidly expensive and very restrictive. Not good for the edderley as the marriage room is up the most dubious swirling flight of stairs, even me who is very steady on my feet struggled to walk up them stairs and i had trainers on - i dreaded the thought of walking up there in my wedding dress and high heeled shoes.

You cant check in until 2pm and your wedding is at 3pm, there is NO room for negotiation on the times. This is if you were having the full day there ie service and reception. The only food available would be what you ordered so if you did stay there and had your meals etc then you got hungry later and wanted something to eat - not a chance except for crisps from the bar. You also had to book a set amount of rooms for your guests or pay a very large supplement for not booking rooms, so either way you got stung.

It is a very lovely place and if it wasnt so restricted on what you could do, ie its your wedding so you want it your way but there planning wont allow it. If this is ok with you then its a great venue but if you want a bit more flexibility then this isnt the place for you. The grounds are stunning plenty of places for photo oppertunities but there are 100'ss of places with just as good places for photo's. If your near go and have a look.

Its obviuosly a great wedding for a lot of people at they have at least 1 wedding everyday of the year.
:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T

Thanks for this i was kinda going of the idea of gretna becaise of the distance but this has made up my mind not to go here. Id only be having a we wedding anyway and i think the food thing would def be an issue. I dont like the fact you cant negotiate either. It would take about 3 hours to get ther via public transport so not going now

chatelherault is lovely but its just not us. Too posh for me and its already booking for 2013 arg! but thanks for the suggestion

i phoned bothwell which is pretty near me and they can hold the ceremony in the hall and it turns out they were actually owned by the black douglas (the bad guys who ran of with bruces heart then chucked it in a feild during a battle) actually owned it and rebuilt some of it. As my names douglas its a we family link and 391 for the day which i thought was resonable. Im going to have a look
  • Hi,
Not sure if any good but I went to a lovely wedding a couple of years ago at a castle not far from Dumfries called Caerlaverock Castle. It is a ruin but a very beautiful one. and I don't think it was that expensive. The guests were bussed in by a vintage bus from a nearby hotel with beautiful gardens. I can't remember the name of that, but could find out if you were interested.
  • We have booked Auchen Castle Hotel for our blessing
