I have put the oats in the Chilli mince after all. I was speaking to DH about it and he said to throw them in. It's made it a much drier mix but that could be because I'd simmered it for a while before putting them in.
DH is up for the challenge and will give fair feed back.....though he thinks I'm taking him back to his childhood!

The cottage pie looks very nice. Is the base exactly the same as the chilli mince?

a little bit more carrot and less onion in this one. I thought p'raps too much carrot might make the chilli too sweet IYSWIM?

I shall take a photo when I've plated it up, if that's ok.

I actually do a chilli that is quite similar to your recipe. I'm not sure if it's cheaper.

Minced Beef (Tesco value, half a large pack so about 400g)
    1 or 2 onions
    2 tins of value tomatoes
1 tin of value baked beans
chilli powder, salt & pepper to taste

This feeds 6/7 and obviously you can add any veg if you have any or can financially stretch to it.
Just thought it might be a way of getting your beans in...:)

I also usually serve it with 50g/75g of rice each.

I expect yours is much more the norm Frankie!

Mr Weezl is 6 foot 3 with superfast matabolism, so I know I make big portions. I figure this is probably a bonus, because once shirley works out not to need all the rice she'll save a bit of cash!

The only thing I would say though is that some people who find our dinners too large also find our breakfasts and lunches a bit small, so it maybe that in terms of calorie load, it is more neutral.

I'm just not at all sure how to allow for that in the menu planner!!!! :D:eek:

just as a note, i use leftover tortia(sp?) wraps for lasagne and when i've made them before they've just been flour, water and a drop of oil rolled out really thin. they go a really nice, filling but not heavy texture when cooked in the sauce and cost pennys.

a lovely happy looking baby - you wouldn't guess that he'd spent the last year on a 'starvation' 50p diet.

    still excuse laptop spelling.

hello! Are you Mr Allegra or are you just giving us a valuable male perspective?

Either way, hello and thanks :)

Yep, that's da man. Lasagne sheets method to follow some time soon - am currently struggling to stuff the tart ! I mean, all the filling into the tart case  The glass of wine earlier didn't help.................

Regarding chili peas (that's not quite right now, is it ? ), I make "keema peas" - basically mince and peas curry. Anyone interested in the recipe ?
