I have just had a thought about vitamin C. I don't think it is destroyed by heat as rose hip syrup is an excellent source and the hips are boiled for quite a long time. I know tests have been done on the syrup to show only a little is lost. I made a winters supply of rosehip syrup for my supply of vit C.

that's good news! my daughters don't eat that much raw fruit this time of year (in the summer it's a diff story) and neither of them like citrus fruits. I always steam veg or else cook things all in one pot so I always thought the vits that leached out would be captured by the sauce.

I did make some rosehip syrup too but haven't been using it much...just on ice cream sometimes. how do you use yours?

Hi just made some pancakes for Weezl and below are my results just heading out now so not done costings will edit them later.
    I made a small batch
    110g flour 0.04
    1 teasp baking powder 0.01
    pinch salt
    1 beaten egg 0.09
    75ml milk 0.09
    75ml water
    1 tblsp lemon juice 0.02
    25g sultanas 0.04

Mix wet ingreds together and then pour slowly onto dry mixing until you have a thick batter. Pour spoonfuls into a hot non stick pan and cook for 3mins until bubbles appear on top then turn over and cook for approx another 2 mins til golden. Would make approx 10 pancakes about the size of a teacup in diameter. Prob not BOBs cups though:rotfl:I know how much she likes her tea.

I did not put sugar in deliberately and they were fine prob could have stood to have more fruit in but i had mine with some honey and to quote a nameless person but you know who you are nomnom.
Heading out now will catch up later

    29p for 10 pancakes

I have rosehip syrup on natural yogurt (like honey), on rice pudding, in a hot drink and to flavour a wine spritzer - perhaps there are other ways too.
  • Sorry to butt in as a poster instead of a lurker but dried fruit, while full of fibre and good for you as part of a meal is tooth decaying as it contains more than 16% fruit sugar.

Dental health education progarmmes emphasise the safe snacks as any fresh fruit and any fresh vegetables and safe drinks as milk and water.

I've just been trying to google the vit c content of rosehip syrup (sorry more sugar maysmummy!) but can't find any stats so if you have an idea malteser I'd be grateful - just wondered how much syrup compared to one orange or 4 apples. still the above lemon pancakes will help!

no use for the project I'm afraid, just trying to keep the phizzies fit!

Hey MM my DH is a dentist too :) He would like the raisin containing snacks to be immediately after a meal as a pudding. I have assured him this will be part of shirley's advice.

    Do you feel the same?

Thanks for delurking it's fab :)

Vit C just been to check the recipecal nutritional profiles...

most of the main meals we've analysed so far have the RDA of vit C, according to recipecal.

The risi e bisi may be an exception, but we can swap the breakfasts and lunches around to accomodate that I think. The chana mutter masal plus just one piece of carrot cake, not counting all else consumed will give above the Vit C RDA for that day. HTH :)

Have you had a look at the spreadsheets malteser, I think it might help cos we've been quite a bit more detailed on there than on here, I think because we're aware this thread is more about having fun with the recipes and I felt a bit bad about making it go too mathematical :o:D

  • Hi Weezl and everyone,

I did post last week to join in but then had some family issues and was very busy with work so got distracted elsewhere..... sorry about that .

I really will try some of the recipes this week , is there anything you want trying sooner rather than later Weezl ??? Would prefer lunches/ snacks type things as have most of main meals sorted for just over a week.

Have spent AGES today catching up on everything and I know there was a long post some pages back asking for help with various things Weezl, would you like to delegate anything my way ? I can do things generally in the evening or early morning. Am happy to collate info from posts / search for info / anything ... whatever I can do to help !

Gotta dash now but please PM or post here if theres anything I can do as I would love to be some help to you ! Will check back in later on. x
  • Hi Weezl

Yes, I agree with your DH, dried fruit as a pudding after meals. Fruit juice also at mealtimes.

I'm a Community dentist, not a GDP so spend a lot of my time on this sort of thing. My children hate the sugar free thing but I heard my DD (12) telling her friend on a sleepover the other day 'spit, don't rinse your mouth out after you've brushed your teeth, it takes the fluoride away' Friend's face:Confused

Good luck , as I've said before, I love your thread.

Hello! That's fab that you're willing to help! Here are a few possibilities:

analysing recipes using recipecal, but have a look at the site before you say yes as I think it's only me and IOIWE who find it useful! Lesley has been using another tool. Lesley how can I access your stats online for that?

testing a recipe or two, whatever takes your fancy. Doesn't matter if we double up on that one, as the more opinions the more mass appeal the planner will have :)

If any of those 'titles' I posted grabbed you, like 'shirley's kit list' or 'how to get family on board' or something, then you could offer to pull together the various views people have into one big post so we can take the writing up forward, IYSWIM?

How do any of those things sound? xxx
