New Security Software - HSBC accounts

The HSBC online banking site is now asking customers to download and install new anti-pishing software from a company called "Trusteer"
I don't download software to my system without checking it
first. In my case I am running Mac OS X with Firefox and
Opera browsers (these browsers have anti-pishing built in),
a Firewall router and Norton anti virus on each machine.
Why do I need this software? Where can I see an
independent analysis of its functionality and impact on a
system?
Is HSBC going to step away from its responsibility
to customers if they are not using this software - in which
case it's time to find another bank.

first direct, A&L, Natwest are all promoting it. While this could have some residual benefit, it is another way like compulsory use of PINs to make it harder for customers to claim in case of fraud.0 -
I'm curious about this too, they ususally send an email before implementing major changes. Plus I can't log on my bank account today as it says the website is sending data in a way that will never complete...Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008
Debt September 20th 2022 £2991.68- 96.92% paid off0 -
I've just noticed the message about downloading the software at HSBC today.
I didn't download, what are others doing? And has it affected your PC!0 -
Trusteer Rapport is a lightweight and excellently integrated piece of software, you don't notice its there and doesn't affect performance.
My mother has it installed on her ancient computer and doesn't make a jot of difference to the performance. Doesn't get in the way. It's stealth. Just go with it

Hi James,
I work in HSBC and am reasonably familiar with this software having tried it myself - as izools has suggested this is efficient software (not bloatware) and it works.
I haven't heard of any banks excluding customers who don't use this. But I like the extra security - and it's easy to use.
Cheers,

As far as I can ascertain the new software is just another way to protect you. I downloaded it and my laptop seems to be running as it did before. Criminals are always trying to find new ways of getting your personal information so the banks have to keep one step ahead of them.
I have not read anywhere that using this software is a prerequisite of being covered by the online fraud gurantee, I will however be asking the question at some point.
I cannot answer your technical questions, HSBC have an excellent phone service were you can discuss any concerns you may have. I was house sitting once and used an unwittingly used an unprotected computer to do my banking. As a precaution customer services changed my sign on details and the put me through to an IT person who was spot on.Money is the headache, money is the cure!0
