Going on holiday to Torbay

We are planning a short break in May (Mon - Fri) to Torbay - just wondering which town people think is nicer, Torquay, Paignton or Brixham?

We will be going by train, which goes staight to Torquay, so that would be easier. Brixham looks nice though.

Any recommendations for self catering apartments, things to do etc?

  • Hi,
I live in Torquay, the three towns in the bay are quite distinct from one another. So where to stay will depend on who is coming with you and what you want to do.

Torquay; built on 7 hills (or so they say) good night life and fair shopping especially the shops on the harbour (call them tac shops as they sell alot of taccy eccentric souveniers) Babbacombe and St.marychurch have some nice shops and brilliant views from the cliff (lovely to sit in the sun with an ice cream or fish and chips) , if you're into it I would recommend a nice walk in cockington, it's very peaceful and picturesque. but in general I would say Torquay town is geared for 20-30 year olds.

Paignton- more tac shops and a few pubs but not as many as Torquay. I'd say it's more for families as it has a nice beach and a pier with amuzments. Goodrington (inbetween paignton and Brix) has a waterslide park, great day out with kids.

Brixham- a quaint fishing villiage (With STEEP hills!) a few nice pubs good fish and chips. The shops there have a weird and wonderful range of oddities to take home. When here do try the fudge/toffee/clotted cream and of course some fish.

Another lovely local town is dartmouth/ kingsbridge. Very picturesque and peaceful. You can do boat day drips up the dart.

I hope this is useful. Enjoy your visit.

Thanks - we are a couple, late 30s/early 40s. Not into hectic nightlife although we do like going to the pub, shopping and coastal walks.

I've seen two apartments, one in Torquay and one in Brixham - how long would it take to get to Brixham from Torquay and how? Bus?
  • Traveline is the main website for checking public transport anywhere in UK. Great site - I can spend hours planning trips, some of which I then do!:

Can't post link as new user - just google it.

Looks like buses Torquay to Brixham take 45-50 mins and run every 20 mins during most of the day.

    Have fun!

Thanks all. We will probably stay in Torquay as it's easiest to get to, and then take day trips out to a few places.

I definitely fancy Kents Cavern, and also the Berry Head nature reserve. And boat trips if the weather is good!
  • wherever you end up you must make time to go to babbacome downs!
that gorgeous view! the little trams to take you up and down the cliff to the beach..

that was my favourite thing about living in Torquay and when we go back to visit family, its the first place i head for!
Its not all about the nightlife so dont let that put you off, we have had some great family holidays there

is there any caravan parks near torquay, we've no car so have to use public transport, but we like going pubs places to eat of camp. so would have to be a cheap taxi or bus ride away
