Can I cash a £100 cheque for myself (Read on...)

I have a major cash flow situation between now and monday. I am with the Halifax bank. Could I take a Cheque written out with the word "CASH" into my local Lloyds TSB for cash and expect to get it.
That is not the only small issue, cashing the cheque will take me over my agreed overdraft limit with my bank. They charge a £5 daily penalty for that, but when I rung them the other day they said Halifax wouldn't be too bothered about the odd situation occuring like that as long as it is only for 1 day or two.
However, would the Lloyds TSB card machine recognize that I do not have the full amount available and decline the cash cheque? I have a £100 Cheque guarantee card, does that make any difference? would they have to take the cheque then? Remember money arrives in the account tomorrow so it would just be a £5 charge today. That is tempting but I don't want to look like a complete idiot in the local Lloyds TSB. Also would I need extra ID along with card and Chequebook?
Any help appreciated.

Could you buy whatever you needed with the cash by writing a cheque to the seller of goods/services instead?
Do you have a credit card? Could you pay with that? Or, alternatively, break the golden rule and take a cash advance (pay it back with fees/interest quick though!).That is not the only small issue, cashing the cheque will take me over my agreed overdraft limit with my bank. Going over your limit WILL damage your internal credit score with them and increase the likelihood of them reducing / removing your overdraft limit in the future.
After you get through this situation, it might be worth thinking about how you budget and save, to ensure you don't find yourself in a similar position in future.

Post Office used to charge £5 for cashing a cheque - local pub used to do it for nothing!0

Post Offices don't cash crossed cheques anymore. We get so many people coming in with cheques expecting us to cash them - they can get a bit stroppy when we say we don't do it
Surely the Post Office will cash cheques for certain specified banks (of which Halifax is I'm pretty sure admittedly not one) as part of their normal banking services? Barclays and Lloyds come to mind. You need your guarantee card AND your cheque book, so that they can cross off the frequency calendar.0 -
Any help appreciated.
Why should people help you when they get accused of being know-it-alls?

Heh, it looks like you might be right! Apparently we cash Bank of Ireland, Barclays, Cahoot and Lloyds TSB personal cheques with a guarantee card.
Normally when someone comes in wanting a cheque cashed it's a cheque from one of their utility companies, which isn't a service we provide. Judging from the debit cards I see people using, Barclays, Cahoot and Bank of Ireland aren't particularly popular in Glasgow which is probably why I've never come across this service, because there simply aren't any customers in the area needing the servce. As for Lloyds TSB, there's a branch just across the road so I imagine people would go in there for cashing their cheques.0
