Ex-boyfriend wont pay his phone bill!

Options
Im not having a good week and today has just topped it off!!

I got a call at my mums house from a company called Westcott Credit Services (which after a bit of googling have found out they are a bit of a cowboy company anyway!!) saying that i had a BT bill 0f £119 that hadnt been paid. I have been with Virginmedia for the last year. After a conversation with the man on the phone i realised that he was talking about when I had left my exboyfriend in a rental property in November 2008. I put all bills etc into his name and signed the lease over to him for the property we had rented. I had told my ex when sorting everything out that he would need to write a letter to BT saying that he was now the account holder as i couldnt change it myself. I stupidly thought he would of done that!!

Anyway the man from Westcott said that i either had to get my ex to pay the bill but if he didnt then i would be liable for the debt as its my name still on the account.

I reluctantly contacted my ex and told him to sort it out with BT. He has admitted that he hadnt informed BT that he was the new account holder and that the bill was his because he had cancelled the broadband before the contract was up. But he is refusing to pay it as he is saying that i owe him half of the fee for getting the house cleaned when he moved out in June 2009!! That is 7 months after i had left and signed the agreement over to him and he had given me back half the deposit.

So basically i need a bit of advice about two things:
1 - how can i get these debt collectors off my back and onto his as its not my debt!?
2 - what legal standing does he have to make me pay for the check out when the lease was signed over to him?

any ideas are welcome

Hat eto say it but as far as BT and the debt collectors are concerned its your name and your responsibility to pay the bill. They will not care less of any arrangement you had with your ex. You basically have no choice but to pay up. what you do after that is up to you. You may need to persue you ex through the small claims court to get him to pay up but in order to do that you will need evidence.

Seconded. This is your debt, sadly. Your ex can refuse to pay knowing that you're the one who will have to stump up the cash I'm afraid. You need to get the debt settled and can pursue him separately for reimbursement if you want to.

you have to pay the bill . You can take your ex to the small claims court if he wont pay you .

  • Visit him with a couple of meaty friends and demand repayment in person?

Not sure how you managed to put all the bills into his name. All you should have been able to do is notify the utilities that you were moving out (this gets your name off the account). Your ex would then have to notify the utilities he was 'moving in' (otherwise he would be cut off).
