Which Family estate to buy ?

I'm looking to replace my 2002 Zafira 1.6 club this summer.

I am guessing it will have a market value of £2k at least by then.

I was dreaming of a Passat diesel estate but was horrified by prices ( I've got a max budget of £6k )
I'd like to gain at least 3-4 years on the reg plate so ideally looking for 2005 model year at least.

Currently considering the following diesel estates ..

Citroen C5

VW Golf

Renault Laguna

Puegeot 407

Does anyone know how these rank in order of Value for money ??

Avoid renault laguna diesels, they have a woeful reputation for poor reliability.

The c5 will be the older model, so will be cheap, but dull.

The Golf will probably be the least value for money.

Personally, i'd run with the 407.

Personally, the only one I'd touch there is the Golf. The others are all French which are not known for their reliability, particularly the electrics.

Personally, I'd go for a Ford, be it a Focus or a Mondeo. "Whatcar" rate both Fords higher than all the ones you've mentioned. Both cars are rated as the BestBuys in their class size for secondhand cars.

the only one of your list i would buy is the golf.

that is if there were no skoda octavias, ford focus, ford mondeos, vauxhall astras left in the world. these will usually be better value for money than any over rated VW.

Agree with Goldspanners, I'd also have a good look at a Skoda Octavia. A very good car at a very good price. You might not even need an estate with the Octavia as the boot on the hatchback is enormous. The same comment can also be said of the Mondeo.

Another vote for the Skoda Octavia estate, its based on the golf but a bit larger. You would get a much newer/better/lower mileage car for the same moey compared to the golf

    Octavia or Mondeo.
Octavia is the better car, but Mondeos are more plentiful and have lower RV's so are a bit cheaper. If you are looking at VW then the Octavia is a no brainer.

I can think of no reason at all for buying a Mid/Large French car, would much prefer a slightly older German.

Any benefit in purchase price will be negated when you come to sell.

That goes double for the Laguna.
