I am confused, as our phone line has developed a problem and we cannot make or receive calls, there is no dialling tone, however I still have internet access. I thought if the phone line went down then internet access would be lost.

No, loss of voice telephony without loss of ADSL broadband is quite common. Report the fault.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Assuming you have a BT phone line:
Try following the steps on this link:
http://www2.bt.com/static/i/microsite/help_and_tips/faults/troubleshooting/no_dial.html
Get someone else to 'linecheck' your phone line using this link:

Is the 1st telephone connection point (master socket) in the house something like this?
http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=7311
If yes, the fault (no dial tone but still having broadband) is symptomatic of a fault with the master socket which is 'owned' by BT or specifically Openreach. It is their responsibility to repair/replace at no cost if it is found to be faulty.
More info available on many websites, including:

Your phone & broadband split off at the Tie Pairs on entering the phone exchange.More likeky a linecard issue on the phone side.0

BT disconnected my line last month because they wanted to, I still had Internet for 2 weeks until an engineer came round to reconnect my line, then my Internet went down and needed reconnection. At the moment, my phone number once again doesn't work, that's right, BT managed to mess up my line twice in a month, my Interenet is still working.
Some experienced person told me there might be a cooling down period where your line is down but Interent would still work for a couple of weeks before going dead.0 -
Phone back on line at 9.30 this evening, it went off at 10.00 am and was reported immediately. Sad that you have to wait on hold for 30 mins!!!!!
Thanks everyone for your info.:hello:0
