so you get nothing at all come up on the screen ?
a linux cd
http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download
would allow you to boot from CD and retrieve his work , unless the motherbaord is dead in which case that will not work either. If the motherboard is dead then the only option is putting the Hard drive from the PC into an external caddy or connect it to a usb to HDD adapter and plugging it into a working PCEx forum ambassador

It could still be the psu even if there is a green light.0

As you say it could just be the plastic switch has broken inside, can you remove the front panel at all and have a look, I had the same problem with a switch a few years ago and had to remove the broken switch and then press the contact with a wooden dowel to turn the computer on.0

If when you press the start button nothing [ drives don't spin up - DVD light and CPU fan doesn't come on ] it sounds like the power supply.
.1. You can prove the switch by putting the flat head of a small screwdriver across the two terminals that connect to the two wires that are connected to the switch. takes about three minutes ! if it is the switch get a £2 bell push from Maplins that will do the job.
.2. While you are in there make sure the big power plug ( there is only one on the motherboard ) is in tight and pull and replace the Video Card & Memory.
Question : are you saying nothing not even the fan on the PSU or CPU spins?Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem.
