Car insurance hire car period.

Hi all.... so without going into too much detail my car was hit by an un-insured driver and my direct line policy has a limit on hire care usage for only 14 days.

The very anoying repair company are now into their third week and i am left without a car at all.

Anyone know if I have any sort of right to start demanding a car from anyone, or do i need to just accept that i have no position to complain?

Thanks,

Andy

  • " So how do you know the other driver has no insurance?"... He admitted it to me and I had him arrested:T

"Do you have the other driver's details?" Yep, fake ones.... he gave me his mates name.... untill the plodd showed up.

"Who was at fault for the collision? " He was.

So i had the hire car from the insurance, but the agreed period has passed.... therefore no more car!

"If you need a car then hire one.".... you do realise this is money saving expert.

    Thanks,

    Andy

If you have his real details and he admitted liability then you can sue him for the cost of repairs and a hire car. You should have legal cover with direct line, so speak to them and get them to chase him up for you.
  • @rev_henry Nice ... i hadnt thought of that... ill phone them now... not sure how far they will pursue as he was a "international student"... apparently... but will try... thanks again.

You really shouldnt waste your time pursuing anyone for a hire car. Why hasnt the car been repaired? 2 weeks seems excessive. ask them for a courtesy car.
  • Thank you, Well the excuses all along from the repair centre is that "due to the adverse weather conditions we are behind in our repair schedules" =roll eyes smiley= :)

I am rubbish complainer in these situations, i'm going to give them one more chance to deliver on their promises and then start perusing them for a courtesy car if they fail to get it sorted this week. If i was paying them i would feel more empowered to have a moan, but i am really lucky the insurance company is covering all the costs and no claims bonus etc.

Its a bit of a !!!!py situation, as if they guy had been insured, usually the insurance company just bill the other deiver for the hire car and there are no worries.

I think a tip for anyone who gets stuck in this situation is dont let the repair company take the car without getting you a reasonable repair date.

Also if you have any doubt in the credentials of the person that just hit your car call the local police, they were really good at helping sort the situation out.

Thanks... i will update if they miss the next due date. Hope not.

A bit late now, but this crap is why so many people use the likes of helphire for non-fault claims rather than their own insurer.

Realistically though, all you can really do is nag the garage for a courtesy car.
  • @ lum .... thanks :)

That was a more general comment. Helphire probably wouldn't take the case on already knowing that the 3rd party was uninsured. They do, however, do an insurance policy for a tenner whereby you are not liable for their costs (hire car and repairs) if it later turns out that the other driver is uninsured.

We've used them in the past and been very grateful for said policy.
  • I've never heard of them before... will google now. Thanks Again,
  • If the bodywork company have a courtesy car then it may be worth chasing them up with that, otherwise, probably in a no win situ I'm afraid, it's been bad enough for me having an accident with an insured driver, 9 days have passed, still no courtesy car, pretty annoying! If you want some money saving advice, don't be fooled into Bell and their courtesy car scheme for an extra 20 odd quid a year. Despite being told on the phone it would cover me in the event of any accident, it turns out you only get one if your car is written off or stolen, naturally I was absolutely fuming when I had this explained to me, but I will get a car if the garage can fix it as they supply courtesy cars to their customers for free!
