Bearing in mind that you are wanting to replace your desktop and don't really seem to want to ship lots of data around your house you won't need a N router. I have a linksys and its fine and previously had a Netgear which the cat ate(no need to ask) which was also Ok. Unlocked in the previous post was probably referring to the fact that the modem was tinkered with by Sky or other ISP to put their own stuff on it. Having said that N will give you forward going options.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Talk talk give away free wireless routers to new customers, have you asked for a free one?
All new (retail) ones are unlocked, it's only second hand ones that have been given away from some isp's that may be locked. A G rated one will be the same speed on the net as an N rated one.
Dg834G's are good, around £45 from amazon.
You can keep the desktop attached to the router with a network cable, and still use it on the web (as well as the laptop wirelessly) if required.!!

Thanks for the advice, and I did phone talk talk but they said that I would have to buy a new one, and i'm sure that if I said that I would cancel my contract then i would have to agree to a new 18 month contract, which I don't want to do at the moment.0

One other point its worth while making sure you get one thats ADSL2+ enabled in case your exchange is going to get 20Mb in the future,4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . my sky router is locked lol what a joke all it is they dont want people nosing in it is case people muck up there settings! if you look around say at skyuser.co.uk there are usernames and passwords for the sky routers in there. i only wanted to get in there to change my wifi username and passwords.
yes if they also if they give you something for free there usally is a tie in but thats the choice pay the £80 quid yourself or get the tie in, would you expect £80 for free also be aware most isps will only give support for those that know nothing with isp given out routers so if you buy a router that hasn't come from the isp most isps will not support it if anything goes wrong. to the person that said about going to 20mb talktalk may do this but with there traffic management sort of is like a broken pencil pointless! sunshine for my money you be better changing isps with a free modem/router with support as you are new to all of this. someone like https://www.bethere.co.uk/web/beportal/homepage or if you have an 02 phone http://broadband.o2.co.uk/home/ or even sky
http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyproducts/broadband
i personally have basic sky tv and pay £10 for there 20mb package pm so is just a little bit more than talk talk, anyway thats my thoughts hope it helps.

locked means the firmware only works on their service (unless you reflash), the router username and password aren't a secret, you can't do much without them.!!

reflashing a router isnt rocket science so i dont see the vast hardship? or am i missing something here as long as can get some firmware that works it really doesnt matter does it. i think you are making a far bigger deal than needs be no?0
