Well if you lived around my way you could rent this property.

Looks nice and it's the only one I've ever seen with a 100 rating on the hip report. My housing benefit covers £395 of the rent. The council will lend the deposit and the landlord need never know you are claiming housing benefit.
But you did say you wanted a house and with the £395 I could also get this 2 bedroom house nearby. DSS welcome and pets considered!!!

    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Social housing is a long wait in most areas - it always has been. You're not a priority. There are two of you working.

You've already had one bite of the cherry ... now you have resulting debts which need to be cleared. The only thing you can do really is carry on working, maybe get a 2nd/3rd job for the short-term. Focus on clearing your debts and building up savings, then move into a studio flat together for a year, then get somewhere bigger.

Stuff doesn't happen overnight... and time flies. Look to the long-term and continue applying for social housing, but don't even dream you'll ever get one, don't pin your hopes on it. Pin your hopes on clawing your way out of your current situation.

It's all about patience and taking responsibility.

I've already got a second job....and hubby is dong any overtime that becomes available. Long term, if we rent a studio flat or somewhere privately thing the bills etc will eat up our wages meaning we wont be able to save for something bigger or buy in future. (we've looked into prices & budgets already).

I'm willing to wait til we've got a decent amount in savings but at the min were still paying off debts and the savings are zero. It just seems so impossible & far away to save up the amount of money needed for a deposit. I guess it doesn't help that its my 30th this year....and i'm starting to feel really "old" and still living like when I was a student....although I had less debt and more money then somehow!
  • Perhaps you could look to house share?
Good luck and well done for addressing the debt issue.

A never thought of a house share...but would you want to share with a couple??? Its ok when your a singleton or living with a group of girls but no-ones really keen to share with a married couple. Will look into it and suggest to hubby, keep our options open eh?
  • Englebert......no we've not turned any down, we've "expressed an interest" but haven't been offered a single property bedsit or 2 bedhouse.

I'm not risking lies on any forms.....plus there are no forms to fill, we've already filled them all in.
  • As has previously been commented upon: you probably don't have a cat in hell's chance of obtaining social housing unless your circumstances change radically. If your aspirations exceed your ability to provide what you think you want and deserve then you either save up a deposit no matter how long it takes or you modify your aspirations.

That may not be palatable but it is realistic imo

You won't know until you try .... an older owner-occupier might be delighted to have a sensible married couple as lodgers.
