Has anyone used a mailorder tree firm?
Hi I'm looking to buy some trees for our new garden. I've had a few quotes from local nurseries some reasonable some expensive. I've found out that the expensive ones put more effort into their growing processes so you get a better tree, but you pay for it. I've seen a mailorder tree firm who are quite reasonable, but I don't know whether or not to use them - will their trees be good quality? Comments from customers are good, but am I better off going for the better quality more expensive ones? Comments welcome.

I bought a mail order duo apple and duo pear. They are still going strong. I even dug up the duo apple and gave it to my neighbough last year as I'd planted it in the wrong place and it had got too big for my garden. It's still doing fine! Here dead we lie because we did not choose

Are these fruit trees or non fruit ornamental ones?
If fruit I used Blackmoor Nursery http://www.blackmoor.co.uk/
I collected [live nearby] last November so trees were dormant, but certainly good, unlike my now dead pear twig from Lidl
Not cheap as you have found outEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -

I've not used them, but a friend was speaking highly of Ashridge Trees in Somerset, said they were great to talk to on the phone, and even gave growing tips for her part of the country.

I've used Deacons Nursery on Isle of Wight - does mail order fruit trees. Good service and good quality specimens.0

An old nursery man told me always to buy trees from a nursery to the north of where you live as it will have been grown hardy and will therefore survive and do well further south.
Always worked for me so far.
aims for 2014 - grow more fruit and veg, declutter0 -
Last year I used Reads Nursery and got an excellent wall trained nectarine which I was really pleased with.
I also used another site (Deacons Nursery) to purchase a dual cherry and kiwi fruit and some soft fruit trees (tayberry, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries). I have to say, of this batch only the kiwi and tayberry were successful. Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

On a cheaper note, homebase have some rather nice looking fruit trees in for £9.99 at the mo. Focus normally have similar and if bought at start of season (soon) they should romp away. Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.
If you quote me, don't forget the capital 'M'

Thanks for all your comments. I think I may go for the more expensive option via a local nursery. They are grown for 3 years (1.5 in the ground, then 1.5 in a container) so they can be planted at anytime of the year. We move into our new house on March 9th (hopefully) so I will order soon after this. Tempted by the cheaper mail order versions, but makes sense to spend that bit more I think.0
