Found Dead Cat in Road

I was just driving along and spotted cars infront swerving out of the way of something, my heart dropped when i realised what it was. A poor kitty that had been run over. Noone else was stopping so i pulled over and ran over to it. Made the cars stop so i could pick him up and bring him over to the pavement. Sadly he was most definitely dead.

I popped him in the boot and took him to nearest vets, they confirmed he was dead. He didnt have a microchip but i have a collar with a tag but half the number has worn off! I dont know what to do. I've tried calling a few differnet number combinations and left messages on answer phones. I sound like a mad lady! Im gonna put an ad on gumtree to say ive found him. What should i say? I dont want to tell someone in a gumtree ad that their poor little kitty has died. Where else can i put adverts?
:(

Oh no that's so sad, I'm so sorry to hear that. Maybe if you contact local places like the blue Cross, or anywhere else that the owner may look for their cat, I'm sure that they will know how to break the news to them should they call looking for it. You are doing the best you can, well done for stopping the cars, you did a good thing.
  • Contact the local council (refuse), RSPCA, cats Protection and other local vets. I would also go back to the road and knock on some doors around where he was. HAve you left the cat at the vets? Hug it is horrible - I have found a cat on the road, had mine run over too. I couldn't pick up the cat on teh road (although could pick mine up) and a local builder picked it up.

    Thanks guys.
Yes i left him at the vets. The lady there was lovely, shes going to contact all the local vets and she took my number so she can call me if they find his owners.

I just couldnt have left him there, he might have still been alive. Plus, if it was my cats id hope that some kind soul would pick them up and try to find me. We had a cat that went missing years ago and we never found out what happened to her. It's horrible not knowing.

Good for you for doing what you've done so far. I saw a dead cat on the pavement last week, although the street cleaner had found it first. I dropped a short letter to the local paper with a description, in case the cat's owners were missing it.

First off you're fantastic for doing all this. I'm godsmacked people were just driving past the poor thing :( Someone could have at least moved the cat onto the pavement.

It is definitely worth knocking on some doors, someone might know who the cat belonged to. If it were me I'd rather know what happened to my cat rather than never knowing.

My cat also got run over, but he was still alive. Luckily for him he was already nearly at the pavement and some passing teenagers picked him up. Must have been horrendous picking him up when he was obviously seriously injured but they kept hold of him and knocked on doors until they got the right one.

Thanks for the replies, ive put some ads up, hopefully someone will read one and contact me.

I feel so sad about it, i'm sitting with my kitten cosily sleeping on my lap with a cup of tea and i'm so happy hes safe here with me.

I'll wait and see if i get any replies to my messages this evening and then try some doors tomorrow. It's quite a big housing estate though so i could be knocking all day.

That was so kind of the teenagers! The future is bright for this world when there are young people like that around.

PicklePick - once you've knocked on a few doors people will tell you which houses have cats and which don't. It's also worth asking any children around as they seem to know everything about everybody. They might even help you if you offer them a little reward if they come back to you with the address of whoever is the owner (£5 between them would be OK I guess).

I am so grateful that my three are all in and safe. One went out for his morning widdles, but he came back safe and sound 10 minutes later. They are busy snoring their heads off having had a fresh chicken dinner.

Yes ill go door knocking tomorrow.

He was half way across a busy main road with housing estates on either side so i could be there a while. I'm hoping that someone will be in touch this evening though.

I cant get the image of his poor little face out of my head now. I'm seriously considering cat proofing my garden now, its that silly? Everytime my two go out ill be worried about them

aw bless you! How kind hearted.

Maybe a note in the local shop or supermarket noticeboard.
My mums cat got run over a few years back when she was at work and a young guy from a few blocks down ran out took his top off and wrapped him up (deffo dead) and he took him home and waited for my mum.

it's these little things that help restore your faith in human kindness.
(i would have done the same thing btw)
