Hi, I know you guys were talking about the problems associated with sending all you pals a Tesco Internet handset, but have you seen this?

    https://www.phonefromhere.com

Its pretty cool, it enables you to use your Tesco Internet Phone account while your on the move, so if you have your laptop with its built in mic and speakers and an internet connection you can make calls!

have a look see what you think :-)

    BLATANT SPAM!!!!!!

I must say i found it odd that the op came to this site ,dug out a very old thread, and then promoted a recently regd domain.

I then found out that a Georgia Brown works for WestHawk the company behind this product.

Yes, but as Tesco are one of the two dearest providers of VoIP (Skype being the other) you would be better off with other providers.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

    Hi Sorry,

you regarded this as spam, it was not my intention :-(

I do work for Westhawk, we are software developers and have recently developed the softphone as a prototype of some new technology we have developed. We do not make any money from the service, we are just trialing the technology. I was interested to hear whether it was useful and whether it worked for anyone.

    appologies for any offense caused.

    Or with Vista.

Even the BBC's Click programme last week said, "Don't'"
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • I think we have to see that Tesco Internet Phone, as well as Skype and even other VOIP packages do have their own advantages as well as disadvantages.

Skype-Skype is free, but both sides need to have Skype running on a PC or have to buy an adapter to run Skype stand-alone.
The first option needs some computer skills and the 2nd money, but the it still has to be configured.
Skype-in as well as Skype-out both are payed extras.

Tesco Internet Phone is a payed package to start, though the most cheep was GBP4.99 for the software and headset.
For a prepay system it does give you a FREE number to call you and indeed calls out do cost money. But so it does with Skype, Vonage, and any other VOIP package; even the one with your Internet Provider.

The IPA1000 indeed seems totally gone and was a reasonably cheep option to connect a standard POTS phone and have it all run outside of your PC; no more chat, that's what you loose.
The Combi phone was last time I looked indeed GBP55.- and is what is currently it seems the only stand-alone option avilable.

Voice quality indeed could be better and I think software version 3 up to 3-0-3-5627 is absolutely crap! I did go back to the version that they have on the site as for W98.

No idea in which other countries than the UK they have numbers available.
At least not in Czech as there they don't even sell the package.
We bought a package in the UK, but after we had moved to the Netherlands. As address we have our UK post address with friends in it.

The problem with choosing between all available phone options, being fixed line, VOIP with your ISP, Tesco Internet Phone and others like Skype, is that all have specific advantages and disadvantages and you have to compare everything.

We still have the fixed line (ISDN with more numbers) as it basically allway works, though with ISDN as long as you have a special ISDN phone or the PABX on a UPS. With that, using a carrier operator can be a lot cheeper than other options.
VOIP-VOIP is basically free and handy if both sides have it available, this includes Tesco Internet Phone.
The VOIP package with our ISP is free with a non regional number (085 in the Netherlands) and calling out to quite a few countries and areas is even cheeper than the Carrier operators used with the fixed line. But that is not by default; its basically changing and you have to check if prices changed.

The fixed line and using carrier operators is quite similar to having a BT line and use another operator for the calls.
I think the situation in NL is somewhat better than the UK in this with better, probably more competative, prices.

But again, before you decide to buy a package like the Tesco Internet Phone, you should know what you buy. Just like going to Vonage or having the phone supplied by the cable operator.
  • What I forgot.
Basically the Tesco Internet Phone package gives us a free regional UK number that for most of our friends and others that need to call us are just a standard UK regional call.
So, nobody in the UK who wants to call us has to call International or use Skyp to still be able to reach us with basicall the same cost as calling others, even though we are now in the Netherlands.

Many people do that with other VoIP Providers too. For example, I have amongst others Sipgate and VoIPStunt local area number, so when outside the UK, people can still call me on my UK number.
