take a cutting from bamboo

Hi,

I have 4 largeish golden bamboo's in the back garden and would like to try and take some cuttings / propogate some more plants...

Whats the best way of doing this?? and when is the best time, somebody mentioned march time, but not sure.

Any advice appreciated.

end of march-april probably best...rather than taking a cutting its a piece of the root you need, with a couple of stems or culms as they are known, attached. can be quite difficult cutting into the edge of the clump and you will probably need secateurs as well as a spade to detach the bit you want:money:

Can you not just break the clump into two or three with a sharp spade ?

Thanks for the replies... Didn't really want to chop the clump, as part of it would be for my mum, and not sure how she would cope with stems about 6-7 foot high in the car....

I had to divide and move some of mine. To make it easier to handle I just trimmed about 2ft from the top then as SailorSam said divided the clump. That would make it an easier size to go into the car.
Bamboo copes well with a wee trim, in fact mine looks all the better for it.
    Hope this helps.

In my experience the smallest bit of root cutting with an intact growth point thrown in a pot watered then ignored yields good results. I have grown countless new bamboo plants from my existing plants this way.

Try in Spring - Ground cuttings : the best are from young shoots which look as though they are growing away from the centre of the plant. Cut with a little root attached.
