Win 98 to ME

I have a computer running on W98 and I have a full version of ME which I would like to install as an upgrade without removing any files or settings.
If I stick the ME disc in and run it will it cause me any problems or will it install as an update?
I really dont want to do a format and fresh install
I'd be grateful for any advice

I think you need an upgrade disk...

There aren't many (if any) advantages of ME over 98 (movie editor and system restore maybe), I'd stick with 98.. and patch it at https://www.windowsupdate.com
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Yes it may well cause problems as 9X (95/98/98se) is totally different.

Me was a rush job, the beta's are more stable.

Get yourself an academic or o.e.m. version of XP home and enjoy stability.

I have used Windows Millennium a very very long time ago and it is the worst windows operating system ever released.

Go sell Me on eBay you could get at least £20 and use your windows 98 to upgrade to XP Home.

Is there a reason you want to upgrade to Windows ME?

To be honest that and older versions of windows are losing support one the 11th July 11 - 2006.

I would look at getting Windows XP or even a copy of Windows 2000 if your computer isnt capable of running XP.

Anyway maybe you can find some more answers here..

to your question if you really want to go ahead and use ME :)

Oh Lord, don't go for ME. I struggled with it for 6 months whilst it crashed at least twice a week, then binned it with a sigh of relief. Albertross speaks wise words.:T

Lucky you only twice a week.

    Mine was like every hour.

To the comment about windows 2000 i think it's only professional that can be updated, think home users version will also be coming to an abrupt end soon.

This may interest some of you looking for a bargain, got sent it via amazon as I buy a lot of puter bits for building from them.

If you have at least 192mb of RAM.... get yourself an OEM copy of Windows 2000 professional. Would not recommend XP with less than 512mb RAM. Windows 2000 is probably the most stable operating system microsoft has written to date.... (except maybe Windows 2003 server).

IMHO, windows ME was worse than windows 98 second edition.... quite unstable, particularly with certain applications and games. Lots of crashing, blue screens and errors with ME. So you might be better of sticking with 98 rather than moving to ME

2000 is also more future proof. It will support many more applications than 9x/ME and be compatible with most applications for XP and Vista.... 2000 also supports NTFS (the NT filesystem), which provides much much MUCH more security than then 98 or ME, and you can apply for own security polices and encrypt your files.

Hope their mobo supports that amount of r.a.m.

512 is or should be the entry level for xp with at least 1.2 ghz processor.

Buy a new Dell for a few hundred quid with Windows XP installed. Don't bother 'upgrading' to ME since it won't allow you to use any more software than 98, and it probably less stable.
