Jauguar S and X types Diesel advice please
Hi there,
Although the old Mondeo is running well again (and so it should with all the attention and money I have thrown at it), I am thinking about replacing it (or keeping it for me), with a diesel Jaguar, either an S or X type. The reason for this mad idea, is that the 2.2 and 2.7 diesel engines have a really good reputation and they eat the miles, and are economic. On the down side are the maintenance bills (I could do some of that myself).
What are people's views on these newer Jags with the smaller engines?

They are very costly to service and maintain compared to BMW and even Audi. They are not as fuel effienct either.
They are impressive for refinement and pull well.
I didn't find the X type very comfortable compared to Mondeo, 3 series and Audi A4.. or Mazda 6, Toyota Avensis.
The X type is decent to drive though, being based (as I'm sure you know) on the Mondeo platform.
The S type is much more impressive but isn't very spacious, the X type has more boot space.0 -
I have a 2.2 auto X type. By far the most comfortable car I've owned. I've driven the new Mondeo 2.0 auto and it's not a patch on the X type, despite the X type being a much older design.
The Mondeo is noisier when idling and there is vibration through the steering wheel. The engine is very rattly when pushed to only 3,000 revs - which is the change point when you want to make progress.
The 2.7 V6 is a great engine and it mates with the auto gearbox very well.
There are plenty of good Jag independents out there so no problem getting it maintained for sensible money.0 -
Parts for the S-Type can be a bit pricey though and they are small inside. Never had an X-Type so can't comment on those.I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling

i know someone who had an X type for a few year, even although it cost a few quid for them to keep the jag service stamp in the book they enjoyed it, they enjoyed it enough to go out and buy the S type 3.0 diesel, its nice enough but its a money pit.every time something goes wrong it goes to the dealer and usually they never get much change of £1000,its been to the dealer a good few times for leaks and noises....work permit granted!0

Why not keep the Mondingo if you have spent loads on it? As buying another car might mean you have to sehll out again on stuff...
Also, the X type has the same !!!!!! engine/gearbox set up as yer Mondingo, so expect DMF failure.
However, saying that, we have only done one X Type DMF, rather than the 101 Mondeo's. Mayb Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag drivers look after their cars more and drive better. Wouldnt want the pipe and slippers rolling off the seats...0 -
I had a X-Type 2.0 diesel which i thought was comfortable and quiet. It was also reliable and economical, however the killer is the service/maintenance charge if you have it done at the Jaguar dealer, it's very expensive for what is effectively a Mondeo.Dogs have owners...my cat has slaves...0
