I wanna a car...

My car's cambelt snapped and awaiting verdict on Friday if it's worth spending the money to repair the engine!!

So IF I decide to buy another one (2nd hand) where the best place to go? There's the Internet, car supermarket, or retailers, etc?

I'm pretty flexible on the make of car

Any recommendations?

Hello ToAoB

I'll move your thread over to the 'Motoring & Public Transport' board, where it should get more views and responses.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

so many questions would need answering on this

how many people would be travelling in the car?
how many miles do you go each year?
how much have you to spend?
how much insurance can you afford?
how tall are you?
how 'large' are you?

you need to answer these sort of things before anyone can give you a realistic suggestion on what sort of car you should get

i eould then consider where to get the car from once you have decided on the make and model of car.

how many people would be travelling in the car? 2 (+1 to come soon!)
how many miles do you go each year? 15k miles
how much have you to spend? depends - can always go for monthly repayments?
how much insurance can you afford? around the Vectra range or similar
how tall are you? 6 ft tall - Vectra B is too short!
how 'large' are you? NOT large - just medium :)

Given the above, I'd buy a Focus from CarGiant.
Can I help?

Yup, a car supermarket place sounds the best place to go - don't have any advice on a specific car but Astra/Focus/Vectra/Mondeo might be a good bet - the larger cars suffer quite badly from depreciation so a used one might be a good buy.

If you go to one of those places and think about taking finance, compare the rates/costs to alternative loans first!
• Get a 3/4 year old saloon, they will have depreciated loads. I'd advise looking for Japanese something like an accord/avensis as they are reliable. You may like to go for a ford as it's cheap to repair, but it is less reliable so you may need to repair it more often, it's up to you.

I would look on autotrader.co.uk to get an idea of the type of thing you can afford, then look at every place you can to find waht you want, car supermarkets would be a good place but often the choice is limited to a lot of the same type of car (the ones I've been too anyway).
